On an autumn day at the outdoor plaza in Xiong'an, beige exhibition tents stood side by side. In front of a booth bearing the red characters "Traditional Processing Techniques of Lulong Vermicelli," visitors examined the products on display while staff members attended to them inside. This was the scene where Qinhuangdao Tongyou Potato Industry Co., Ltd. participated in the "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Its Prime: Xiong'an Intangible Cultural Heritage Fair & 2025 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Intangible Cultural Heritage Joint Exhibition."

A Century-Old "Sour Slurry" Method: Over Twenty Steps to Create a Single Strand of Vermicelli

The traditional processing technique for Lulong vermicelli employs the "sour slurry method" to extract starch; it relies on natural fermentation to precipitate the starch and uses no chemical additives. From the washing, crushing, and grinding of fresh sweet potatoes to fermentation, sedimentation, starch extraction, gelatinization, dough mixing, extrusion, and drying, a single strand of vermicelli undergoes more than twenty processing steps before being bagged.

This processing technique was listed in the third batch of Hebei Province's Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2009. Located at the southern foot of the Yanshan Mountains, Lulong County boasts a climate and soil ideal for sweet potato cultivation and is known as the "Hometown of Sweet Potatoes in China"; the local history of vermicelli processing dates back over a century.

An Established Factory with Over 30 Years of History, Featuring "Han Er Ge" Sweet Potato Vermicelli

The predecessor of Qinhuangdao Tongyou Potato Industry was the Lulong County Shuangli Vermicelli Factory, established in 1992; it adopted its current name in 2017. Headquartered in Xiazhai Township, Lulong County, the company covers an area of more than 60,000 square meters.

While preserving the traditional steps of the sour slurry method, the enterprise organizes production according to standardized food processing norms. Its products serve markets in Beijing, Tianjin, Northeast China, and Northwest China, and are exported to South Korea and Southeast Asia. The "Han Er Ge" series of sweet potato vermicelli displayed at the booth is the company's flagship product.
